Do Pathologists Ever Talk to Patients or Families?

A coroner or Justice of the Peace is a legal authority who may have no medical background. Their job is to decide if a death warrants an official investigation and, if so, order an autopsy. When they order that autopsy, it must be performed by a medical expert—a board-certified forensic pathologist. Simply put, the Justice of the Peace asks the legal "why," and the pathologist provides the medical answer.
