For an infant 12 months old or younger who dies suddenly or is found dead with an unknown cause, Texas law requires immediate reporting. The justice of the peace or medical examiner must inform the parents or legal guardian that an autopsy will be performed, and the parents or guardian must be notified of the results after completion. The state must reimburse a county $500 when the primary cause is sudden infant death syndrome, according to Texas Health and Safety Code Section 673.002.
